While the event of a divorce is a considerable event for a child to endure, vast research has been conducted that shows that it can be more detrimental than once thought. Previous researchers have demonstrated that a divorce can impact on a child's psychological and physical well-being and may continue into adulthood. Considering these potential effects of a divorce, this current research project explored the relationship between the effects of an early childhood divorce on one's self-esteem, college adjustment, and relationship quality in a sample of college students collected via weblink through Facebook.com. In total, 113 current students participated in the project, with a sample evenly represented between gender (male-62, female-50, other-1) and divorce/intact families (divorced-57, intact-56). The results supported all hypotheses indicating that adult children of divorce have lower self-esteem, college adjustment, and relationship satisfaction with higher levels of depression when compared to intact families. Results were not significant for hypotheses looking at gender differences within the divorced subgroup regarding the aforementioned variables. In all, the results supported previous research that regardless of gender, the event of a divorce can have a negative impact on an individual even after the divorce proceedings were concluded.
